This small group class is designed specially for adults ages 55 to 90 and is not your typical “hold onto a chair and stand on one leg” program. We use a cutting-edge, highly interactive approach that makes training your balance system engaging, effective, and fun!
Most people think balance is all about muscle strength. In reality, your balance is controlled by your brain, which relies on three main systems: your eyes, your inner ear (vestibular system), and the sensory nerves in your feet and joints.
In this class, we use the neurological rule of “sensory before motor”. By playing specialized games that train your vision and inner ear, we give your brain better information - which instantly results in safer and more coordinated movement!
Additionally, this training is highly effective for those dealing with vertigo or other balance-disrupting issues, though a formal diagnosis is not required to participate.
What You Will Experience in this Class
We keep things moving, laughing, and learning. Throughout our biweekly classes on Tuesdays & Thursdays for 6 weeks, we will explore:
Vision & Inner Ear Drills: We will challenge your balance through fun drills like walking while turning your head, and visual tracking exercises to sharpen the reflexes that keep you upright.
Dual-Task Challenges: Real-world balance requires thinking and moving at the same time. We will use interactive “cognitive-motor” challenges - like walking while solving simple puzzles - to train your brain to handle distractions safely.
The Art of Safe Landing: As the saying goes, “Gravity never fails, and the Earth never misses”. We will teach you safe, gentle landing strategies to spread out impact forces and protect yourself is a slip ever does occur.
The “Get Back Up” Plan: Knowing how to confidently get up from the floor is a crucial life skill. We will practice simple, step-by-step techniques to safely return to your feet, ensuring you never feel stuck.
